B.A.R.S. of the Week

by Baba Bomani

1.
What I did this morning for Dr. King’s birthday, was look up a couple of his quotes about capitalism, combined those into a paragraph, then turned that paragraph into a rhyme. The paragraph was… I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic…. [Capitalism] started out with a noble and high motive… but like most human systems it fell victim to the very thing it was revolting against… (Letter to Coretta Scott, July 18, 1952) One day we must ask the question, "Why are there forty million poor people in America?"… When you ask that question, you begin to question the capitalistic economy. (Final speech to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1967) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/obery-m-hendricks-jr-phd/the-uncompromising-anti-capitalism-of-martin-luther-king-jr_b_4629609.html Dr. King was more socialistic than you might imagine/ Because he watched the system burn his people like a dragon/ Capitalism started with motives that were noble/ Now people feel immobile and rebel local and global/ Here in America we must ask the question/ Why aren’t the 40 million poor people what we invest in?/ Why do they feel stranded with no sense of autonomy?/ Ask that and you question the capitalist economy/
